Choosing the Costa del Sol: a decision that shaped a career
At the age of eighteen, with a clear ambition to pursue a professional golfing career, I was fortunate to have the full support of my father. He gave me the freedom to choose where I would base myself, and together we approached that decision calmly and logically.
We focused on three key factors. First, the concentration of high-quality golf courses and practice facilities. Second, the best winter weather conditions in Europe. And third, overall quality of life.
Viewed through those criteria, there was little competition. The Costa del Sol — and particularly Marbella, Estepona, and Benahavís — stood out immediately. From the very beginning, it was clear this was a place where I could truly develop and thrive as a golfer.
Forty years later, still no regrets
Looking back forty years on, and despite the occasional distraction of the lifestyle the region offers — which is admittedly hard to resist — I can honestly say I have no regrets. The Costa del Sol remains a haven for golfers. The combination of world-class courses, excellent practice facilities, and the ability to play year-round is still unmatched. Add to that a lifestyle that naturally balances sport, nature, and social life, and it becomes easy to understand why so many golfers choose to stay long term.
One region, countless outstanding courses
When asked to name a favourite course, Richard simply smiles.
Choosing just one is almost impossible. One of the Costa del Sol’s greatest strengths is its variety. Each course has its own character, design philosophy, and unique challenges. No two rounds ever feel quite the same.
For anyone visiting the region for the first time, my advice is simple: play as many courses as you can. Whether you are an experienced player or just starting out, you will find courses that suit your game, challenge your skills, and keep you coming back.

Having such a wide selection of excellent courses close to home is something many golfers only dream of. Beyond the golf itself, the social side of the game is another major advantage. Joining one of the many local golf societies — such as Hogan’s Hackers in San Pedro de Alcántara — is a great way to play regularly, meet like-minded people, and become part of the local community.
